You&#8217;ve made a huge and very courageous move regarding fair wages. Thanks for stepping up.<\/p>\n<p>Before I continue, you need to know a few facts about me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> I am <i>not\u00a0<\/i> a member of the International Franchise Association.<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, I\u2019m not very well liked by the IFA\u2019s upper echelon. I don\u2019t generally agree with their views on well, just about everything. In other words, I&#8217;m not a shill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> I&#8217;m an <em>independent\u00a0<\/em> franchise ownership advisor. I advise prospective franchise business owners-from all over the US on how to carefully choose and research franchises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> I started the first-ever blog solely focused on franchising\u2026way back in 2006. You&#8217;re on that blog now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> I write about franchising for several well-known small business websites.<a title=\"joel libava press\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-press-releases\"> I\u2019m called upon by the media<\/a>-a lot, for my truthful insights on all things franchising. As a matter of fact, I weighed in on the $15 an hour debate on Seattle\u2019s <strong>KIRO-TV<\/strong> a couple of months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know a little about me, let\u2019s get down to the reason for me writing this open letter to you, Mr. Mayor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019re Wrong<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As much as I support workers getting paid more, <a title=\"joel libava minimum wage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-owners-increasing-minimum-wage-will-increase-profits\">and have stated as much in the past<\/a>, there\u2019s something you need to know.<\/p>\n<p><em>You\u2019re wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re wrong to look at a local franchise business as a big business. It\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>The person who opened it up\u2026who took a significant financial risk to open a business <i>in your city<\/i>\u00a0 is <i>your<\/i> neighbor. This person, this franchisee, <i>is a citizen of<strong>\u00a0 Seattle<\/strong><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This <i>small business owner<\/i>\u2026this <i>franchisee<\/i>, may have 2-3 employees-tax-paying employees. A really successful franchisee in <strong>Seattle<\/strong> may have 20 or even 30 employees. <b>But not 500 employees<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The franchisor\u2026the company behind the local franchise owned by one of your local residents, probably doesn&#8217;t have 500 employees either.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Wal-Mart<\/strong> in Seattle\u2026or the<strong> Target<\/strong> in Seattle, <i>they<\/i>\u00a0 have 500 employees. Those <i>are<\/i> big businesses. They\u2019re corporate operations with thousands of employees and <i>billions<\/i>\u00a0 of dollars in revenue.<\/p>\n<p>The franchisee\u2026that local resident who\u2019s running a sandwich shop with a few employees, and is working 6-7 days a week, is probably making $50k-$75k a year-if the expenses are in order.<\/p>\n<p>And, this local Seattle resident\u2026this franchisee, probably took out a small business loan to earn the right to make that money.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Please Look At Franchise Businesses One More Time <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mayor, please don\u2019t lump local <strong>Seattle<\/strong> franchise businesses in with big businesses.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re\u00a0<i>not<\/i>\u00a0 the same. <i>That\u2019s<\/i>\u00a0 why I wrote this <strong>open letter<\/strong> to you.<\/p>\n<p>Corporations don\u2019t own these franchises\u2026the stores and restaurants that dot Seattle\u2019s streets and neighborhoods.
