The journey to buying a franchise is an exciting yet challenging endeavor. You certainly don’t need well-meaning friends and relatives around who allow your franchise dream to be derailed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s because along with the excitement of potentially working for yourself<\/a>, there’s the gut-level fear that comes with it. That scary self-talk.<\/p>\n

“What if I choose a lousy franchise<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

“What if it takes me YEARS to make money<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

“What if I never<\/strong> make any money<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

Right?<\/p>\n

So you ask for advice and opinions.<\/p>\n

On Asking Your Well-Meaning Friends And Relatives For Advice And Opinions<\/h2>\n

While it can be tempting to seek advice from friends and family, not everyone will understand your vision. Heck, they probably won’t (<\/span>and don’t<\/em>) understand the intricacies of the franchise world. <\/span><\/p>\n

That usually leads to well-meaning individuals expressing concerns or doubts, and giving you their tips and opinions. <\/span><\/p>\n

In a lot of cases, this unintentionally steers you away from your goal<\/a> of owning a business. <\/span><\/p>\n

As a matter of fact, I’ve worked with people who have had their franchise dream derailed by well-meaning friends and relatives. And it’s not a pretty sight.<\/p>\n

Specifically, they’ve talked themselves out of the franchise opportunity they were starting to get interested in after “hearing something<\/em>” from a well-meaning, but totally unqualified family member or friend.<\/p>\n

How sad.<\/p>\n

\"sad<\/a><\/p>\n

Try not to allow that to happen to you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Scratch that: Make a commitment (right now<\/em>) to ignore the naysayers.<\/p>\n

After you’ve made that commitment, you can start doing the work.<\/p>\n

And, don\u2019t kid yourself; it\u2019s going to take a lot of hard work to get this right.<\/p>\n

But, it will<\/em>\u00a0 be worth it. Even if you don\u2019t buy a franchise<\/em>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right; you may not<\/em> buy a franchise<\/a> after you’ve done the work.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n

As a matter of fact, it\u2019s really okay with me<\/em>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because I\u2019m not<\/em> paid if you buy a franchise<\/strong>\u2026like a franchise broker or franchise consultant is.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lot easier than you think to get derailed by someone.<\/p>\n

If you’ve already started your search for the best franchise around<\/a>, and you’ve told some people close to you about the franchises you’ve found, you probably know what I mean.<\/p>\n

Keep reading. I\u2019ll give you a few examples.<\/p>\n

Classic Derailments<\/h2>\n

Below, I’ve listed some derailments that you may have heard, or will hear\u2026if you start looking into franchise business ownership<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve heard ________ franchisees weren’t making any money these days<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear __________________ has been sued numerous times<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI keep hearing _____ ______ is having problems finding good locations<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hear that by the time you pay rent, payroll, and all the other stuff, there\u2019s hardly anything left for you when you own a franchise<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

“I hear the franchise companies make all the money<\/a><\/em>“<\/p>\n

\u201cFood franchises are a dime a dozen. I wouldn’t buy any of them<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blah, blah, blech.<\/p>\n

Here’s How To Not\u00a0 Get Derailed<\/h2>\n

The best way to avoid the naysayers\u2026to avoid getting your franchise dream derailed as you search for a franchise business you\u2019d like to own (or at least learn about<\/em>) is to keep things to yourself. That\u2019s right: Be quiet.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t tell them what you\u2019re doing. \u00a0Well, not specifically.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s perfectly okay to share (with a few people<\/em> close to you<\/em>) your plans. After all, buying a franchise is big<\/strong>. It\u2019s a major life decision<\/a>, and it\u2019s possibly a risky one.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 ways to lower your risk when buying a franchise<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, here\u2019s what you should say:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking of becoming my own boss, so I\u2019m going to learn about franchising. That means I’ll be checking out a few franchise opportunities. I\u2019m not going to jump into anything. I\u2019m just going to explore some ideas. I\u2019ll give you some specifics if I find an opportunity that looks good<\/em>. How does that sound<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Nice, huh?<\/p>\n

Try it. It’s a great way to avoid hearing negative, usually untrue stuff, from well-meaning friends and relatives.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because, in essence, you told them you\u2019re not going to be sharing anything with them unless you find an opportunity worth sharing.<\/p>\n

One more thing<\/strong>: If their reaction to what you just told them is less than positive, don\u2019t say another word about it. Just focus on your dream.<\/p>\n
