That&#8217;s probably because\u00a0of her entrepreneurial husband, <a title=\"ray kroc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/ray-kroc-the-entrepreneur-who-built-the-mcdonalds-franchise\">Ray Kroc<\/a>. <em>He<\/em> was the one who was always in the spotlight. Because <a title=\"ray kroc mcdonald's history\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcdonalds.com\/us\/en-us\/about-us\/our-history.html\" target=\"_blank\">McDonald&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s why I <em>now<\/em> know a heck of a lot about <b>Joan Kroc, the mighty McDonald&#8217;s multimillionaire who couldn&#8217;t stop writing big checks.<\/b><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1101984953\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1101984953&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thefrakin-20&amp;linkId=e736287b551e200010604a336895c694\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ASIN=1101984953&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;WS=1&amp;Format=_SL250_&amp;tag=thefrakin-20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thefrakin-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1101984953\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This new book, written by Lisa Napoli, tells the Kroc story. The <em>real<\/em> one. And, it&#8217;s a good book.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Disclosure: I received a review copy of Ray &amp; Joan from Dutton, who published the book, at no charge<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What I Learned About Ray And Joan Kroc<\/h2>\n<p>First off, Ray and Joan &#8220;<em>knew<\/em>&#8221; each other for a long time before they finally married. That&#8217;s all I&#8217;m going to say. (<em>The book reveals the juicy details<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Ray drank a lot. He liked the cheap stuff: Early Times Whiskey.<\/p>\n<p>Before they got married, Ray &amp; Joan <em>had<\/em> to live in Las Vegas for 6 weeks in order to obtain divorces from their spouses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-22018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas-620x465.jpg\" alt=\"joan kroc ray kroc las vegas riviera\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ray-and-joan-kroc-riviera-las-vegas.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(<em>Ray and Joan lived at the Riviera for 6 weeks<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Joan wore an <strong>11 karat<\/strong> pink diamond.<\/p>\n<p>Ray always <del>wanted<\/del> demanded that Joan looked meticulous.<\/p>\n<p>Ray loved his whiskey.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Several more interesting\/troubling things are disclosed in Lisa Napoli&#8217;s new book<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>More Whiskey<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of troubling things, Ray&#8217;s love for whiskey, along with his volatile\u00a0personality, led to a life-changing day for the Krocs. It was the day that an officer from Cook County (<em>Chicago<\/em>) greeted Ray with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A court summons<\/li>\n<li>Divorce papers from Joan<\/li>\n<li>A restraining order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The divorce papers described the defendant\u00a0(<em>Ray Kroc<\/em>) as someone with &#8220;<em>a violent and ungovernable temper<\/em>&#8221; who &#8220;<em>has in the past inflicted upon the person of the plaintiff physical harm, violence and injury.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(<em>More details of the divorce papers can be found in Lisa&#8217;s book, on page 130<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Then&#8230;Like It Never Happened<\/h2>\n<p>The next thing that happened could have been taken from an episode from any of the popular soap operas that were on television at the time.<\/p>\n<p>A few months after Joan served Ray with the divorce papers, she suddenly called off the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it was the pressure she was getting from Ray&#8217;s team of powerful Chicago lawyers. Maybe it was something else. Not at all. It&#8217;s a book that reveals a lot about what Ray was like as a businessman and a husband.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Ray Ray. What about Joan?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Joan Kroc: The Mighty McDonald&#8217;s Multimillionaire (With A Check-Writing Addiction)<\/h2>\n<p>After Ray&#8217;s death in January of 1984, Joan Kroc became a woman on a mission. She became a check-writing machine.\u00a0Joan Kroc had tons of money at her disposal, and she decided to use it for the public good. Lisa&#8217;s book provides a glimpse into the where&#8217;s and why&#8217;s of Joan&#8217;s generous donations.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Short List Of Who Joan Kroc Wrote Big Checks To<\/h2>\n<p>Joan believed in the power of public radio. \u00a0That&#8217;s why <a title=\"joan kroc npr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=1494600\" target=\"_blank\">NPR received a check for $200 million<\/a> from her<\/p>\n<p>A check for $18.5 million went to the San Diego Hospice*<\/p>\n<p>*Unfortunately, the San Diego Hospice <a title=\"san diego hospice joan kroc\" href=\"https:\/\/inewsource.org\/2016\/03\/18\/san-diego-hospice-could-have-been-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently<\/a> closed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>At its peak, San Diego Hospice cared for 1,000 terminally ill patients a day. It was a national founder and leader in hospice care.
