{"id":22927,"date":"2017-03-10T19:36:46","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T19:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/?p=22927"},"modified":"2021-06-29T17:14:16","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T21:14:16","slug":"business-opportunities-no-franchise-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/business-opportunities-no-franchise-fees","title":{"rendered":"All About Business Opportunities: No Franchise Fees And Lots of Freedom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/women-1784755_640.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-22929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/women-1784755_640-620x410.jpg\" alt=\"business opportunities no franchise fees\" width=\"680\" height=\"410\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Are you looking at franchise opportunities? <b>Business Opportunities<\/b>?<\/p>\n<p>Both?<\/p>\n<p>Go with a &#8220;<em>Business Opportunity<\/em>&#8221; if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You really don&#8217;t want to pay <b>franchise fees<\/b> and royalties<\/li>\n<li>You <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> want to own a business that requires strict adherence to rules<\/li>\n<li>You would prefer <em>not<\/em> to sign a 40-page upfront business contract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You <em>do<\/em> know the difference between a franchise opportunity and business opportunity, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t, you <em>need<\/em> to.<\/p>\n<p>For example, there are no franchise fees* and no rules. You have a lot of <b>freedom<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>*Business opportunities don&#8217;t have upfront <strong>franchise fees<\/strong> or ongoing royalties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Business Opportunities: No Franchise Fees And More<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to realize that a \u201c<em>Business Opportunity<\/em>\u201d is a lot different from a franchise opportunity. A business opportunity is more of a \u201c<em>no rules<\/em>\u201d type business model. (<em>When I was a franchise broker, a business opportunity seller-and actually the CEO of the business opportunity company, told us to tell our candidates that his business was a business with &#8216;no rules and no royalties.&#8217;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<em>no royalties<\/em>\u201d part is true. If you end up buying a business opportunity instead of a franchise opportunity, you won\u2019t have to pay monthly royalties\u2026those monthly checks that every franchisee sends in to corporate that are usually based on a percentage of gross sales. And, you won\u2019t have too many-if any, rules to follow. There\u2019s more.<\/p>\n<p>The business opportunities offered these days usually provide the minimum needed to help you launch your business. The support is usually not ongoing. (<em>Unless you\u2019re willing to pay for it.<\/em>) In addition, the people who are selling business opportunities do have rules-laws, actually, to follow. But they\u2019re generally not held to account as much as sellers of franchise businesses are.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Business Opportunity Laws<\/h2>\n<p>My friend, Susan Payton, summed up some of the business opportunity laws for sellers in an article she wrote:<\/p>\n<p><em>Anyone selling a business opportunity or bizopp must now provide information on a one-page disclosure document (PDF file) at least seven days before the buyer pays money or signs a document.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Specifically, the seller must also state the following:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whether legal action has ever been taken against the seller<\/li>\n<li>Whether there is a cancellation or refund policy for the business transaction<\/li>\n<li>Any earnings claims that the buyer will earn a specific amount of money through the bizopp<\/li>\n<li>References for the seller<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in learning more about how business opportunities are offered for sale, <a title=\"ftc biz opps\" href=\"https:\/\/smallbiztrends.com\/2012\/01\/ftc-business-opportunity-rule-what-it-means.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read<\/a> the rest of Susan\u2019s article.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Franchise Opportunity\/Business Opportunity Pros And Cons<\/h2>\n<p>There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of business models. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Franchises have rules; lots of them. Some of them are in their 300 page operating manuals<\/li>\n<li>Non- franchise businesses have rules, too-but you are the rule-maker.<\/li>\n<li>Franchise businesses have specific marketing and advertising plans.<\/li>\n<li>Franchise businesses have other like-minded business owners that you can easily contact and network with. You can even have a few mentors stacked around the country that can help you figure things out. After all, they\u2019ve probably experienced the same things<\/li>\n<li>Generally speaking, non-franchise businesses are usually of the solo variety. You\u2019re probably not going to talk with a lot others that are doing what you do. Plus, they are not as easy to find because each business opportunity owner has his or her own corporate name. Franchise businesses all have the same name.<\/li>\n<li>Non-franchise businesses try different things, until they\u2019ve found what works<\/li>\n<li>Non-franchise businesses don\u2019t have nearly as many legal requirements to deal with. They have to pay taxes, keep receipts, and maybe have some basic contracts set-up to use with vendors and\/or suppliers. This one\u2019s not even close<\/li>\n<li>Franchises are under contract. Most franchise owners sign a 10-year franchise contract. In it, mutual expectations are explained, along with enough legalese to keep an Ivy League law student engaged in learning, for months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Read The Fine Print<\/h2>\n<p>To summarize, as you look for money-making franchise opportunities, you\u2019re going to run into \u201c<em>business opportunities<\/em>,\u201d too. That\u2019s okay. Just know what you\u2019re getting into and how a business opportunity differs from a franchise opportunity (<em>besides the fact that there are no franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/the-franchise-fee-dont-focus-on-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fees<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> Some business opportunities use the word \u201c<em>franchise<\/em>\u201d in their marketing. You may have to read some of the fine print on their websites and\/or printed documents.
