When I turned 40 years old, I knew an ugly<\/strong> truth.<\/p>\n

This:<\/strong> I was going nowhere fast. (Career-wise<\/em>) And in my mind, I was<\/del> felt like a loser.<\/p>\n

LOSER<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In my case, each time I got a new job, the \u201choneymoon<\/em>\u201d period became shorter and shorter.<\/p>\n

Every single time I thought I had found \u201cthe one<\/em>,\u201d the one job…the one company that was going to finally<\/em> let me be the person I was meant to be, and pay me the kind of money I felt I deserved, something always happened.<\/p>\n

New management came in. Or, new rules were imposed. Something like that.<\/p>\n

Or, in the case of my last job (in 2000<\/em>) the place was being sold<\/a>, and I got fired.<\/p>\n

After the firing, loser-mode went into hyper-drive<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I had a young child. I had bills to pay. But, at least my wife was working full-time. But still…<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I Had No Idea What I Wanted To Do<\/h2>\n

But I knew what I didn\u2019t<\/strong> want to do.<\/p>\n

Then my dad called.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cJoin me<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cHow would I do that? I don\u2019t know anything about franchising<\/a>-the part of franchising you\u2019re involved in<\/em>.\u201d (Other than being in franchise business sales management<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Dad said, \u201cYou can learn it. I\u2019ll teach you. You\u2019d be great at it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two Months Later<\/h2>\n

I did it.<\/p>\n

I joined my dad\u2019s franchise consulting firm.<\/p>\n

Man was I scared.<\/p>\n

No salary. No bonuses.<\/p>\n

But no bosses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That made me smile.<\/p>\n

Wait. I lied.<\/p>\n

That part made me feel exuberant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ve never looked back.<\/p>\n

NEVER.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You Can Do It<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s true that several things need to line up in order to make a big move-like becoming your own boss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You just need to be ready when they do.<\/p>\n

I was.<\/p>\n

Although I didn\u2019t know it (consciously<\/em>) at the time.<\/p>\n

But I was in pain. Career pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I had<\/em> to do something different.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t take it anymore.<\/p>\n

I was beyond dissatisfied.<\/p>\n

I was miserable. I was at my breaking point<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Heck, I\u2019m starting to get nauseous as I write this…as I flash-back to that time.<\/p>\n

That time at the end of 2000.<\/p>\n

When one door closed.<\/em><\/p>\n

And another one opened.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"when<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My Wish<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re in career pain…if you\u2019re at the end of your rope, and you know in your heart that you can\u2019t keep doing what you\u2019re doing, my wish for you is that when that door closes…and it will one day, you\u2019ll be able to clearly see the other door.<\/p>\n

The door of opportunity<\/em>.<\/p>\n
