That’s because more and more franchise business opportunities<\/a> are being offered every year. In other words, the numbers are too big. There are too many choices!<\/p>\n

To be sure, it’s great to have choices.<\/p>\n

But having too many choices<\/a>…too many options, can actually makes decisions more difficult.<\/p>\n

That’s why you need to do the following things\u00a0before<\/em> you start searching for a franchise to own. These things will increase your chances of finding a great franchise to buy on a franchise website.<\/p>\n

A Free Tool For You<\/h2>\n

1. Figure out your net worth using my free tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s crucial for you to determine if you have the financial capability to buy and operate a franchise business. If you don’t, it’s better to find out now, so you don’t invest in something you can’t afford.<\/p>\n

The rule of thumb is to have a minimum net worth of $350,000<\/strong>, along with the ability to write a check for $50,000<\/strong>-upfront. (Most of my clients have a $500,000 net worth or more<\/em>)<\/p>\n

2. Determine your top skills<\/p>\n

This exercise is important, so grab your notebook and a pen or pencil.<\/p>\n

The first thing I want you to do is list what you feel are your best skills. Write down everything you\u2019re really good at.<\/p>\n

Next, on another piece of paper, using this list<\/a>, write down what you think are your most dominant personal traits.<\/p>\n

Those two things-a list naming your best skills, and a list of your dominant traits, will enable you to do a more focused search for a franchise that makes sense for you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. Budget<\/p>\n

Next, you need to figure out what you’re willing to invest in a franchise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tell yourself you’ll only look at franchise opportunities with a total investment of $300,000-or whatever your number is. That way, you won’t waste time on franchises that are financially* out of reach.<\/p>\n

*95% of the time, you’ll know what the total investment range of the franchise is going to be, upfront. Personally, I wouldn’t waste my time investigating any franchise concepts that don’t disclose investment amounts up front.<\/p>\n

The fact that there are franchisors that won’t divulge total upfront investment amounts until you contact them, and\/or fill out a form, angers me to no end. Why would they do that? Why make would-be franchisees jump through hoops…just to find out if they can afford to buy an “opportunity<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

The Dalai Lama says that “A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

4. Talk to him<\/p>\n

I happen to think that it’s wise to consult with your husband, wife<\/a>, or partner, before you embark on an adventure like this.<\/p>\n

Buying a franchise is big. It’s not for the faint-of-heart. It takes courage. Smarts.<\/p>\n

What’s more, without the support of the people near and dear to you, exploring franchise ownership-and potentially buying a franchise business, will be that much harder.<\/p>\n

Because at the end of the day, although you’re the one putting in the work, and doing the research, your decision will<\/em> affect those around you-<\/strong>especially if you move forward and buy the franchise. For years to come. Seriously.<\/p>\n

It’s kind of like the alcoholic who continues to drink, damn the consequences, because “he’s only hurting himself<\/em>.” (Right<\/em>.\u00a0Like his family hasn’t been affected by his years of drinking.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

And for heaven’s sake; involve your wife, husband, or partner in the process-and the decision. It’s a big one!<\/p>\n

If you want to save time, if you want to only look at franchise opportunities where your skills will be a good match as an owner, you need to picture yourself as the franchisee.<\/p>\n

Take the case of a food franchise<\/a> business owner. What do you think the owner does? What skills does she use?<\/p>\n

Bluntly, I can tell you which ones aren’t<\/em> used.<\/p>\n

For one, sales.<\/p>\n

Case in point: How much “selling<\/em>,” does the franchisee of a food franchise do in a typical day? I’m talking about real<\/em> selling, the kind of selling that involves closing deals. Not a “Would you like to make this a Special Value Meal instead<\/em>?” type of sale.<\/p>\n

Secondly, presentations.<\/p>\n

Namely, unless you’re going to do weekly demonstrations in various venues around town of how you prepare your fantastic fast food. I don’t see you doing them.<\/p>\n
