A Story: The Red Pepper Pizza Franchise<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve had a couple of conversations\u2026good ones at that, with the franchise development representative of \u201cRed Pepper Pizza<\/em>.\u201d (I made up the name<\/em>)<\/p>\n

This pizza franchise is well within your budget, and you\u2019ve been told that there\u2019s plenty of available territory in your area. Thing is, you don\u2019t know much about the brand.<\/p>\n

More importantly, you haven\u2019t gotten the specifics yet, because you just started looking at the franchise a week and a half ago. But you\u2019re so excited!<\/p>\n

Red Pepper Pizza looks like a great franchise opportunity.<\/p>\n

So you go to the Red Pepper Pizza website (again<\/em>!) to see if there\u2019s a franchise location within driving distance-and by golly there is, and it\u2019s only about 25 miles away! (You know where this is going, right<\/em>?)<\/p>\n

One Part Of Franchise Opportunity Research: Driving<\/h2>\n

One hour later you\u2019re there. And hey…it\u2019s lunchtime!<\/p>\n

So, you put yourself in \u201cdetective mode<\/em>,\u201d and start scoping out the parking lot.<\/p>\n

In this case, detective-mode really means sitting in your car for 10-15 minutes to \u201cobserve<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re done observing the parking lot, the entrance to the restaurant, and counting how many people are coming and going etc., you head in.<\/p>\n

You look around-quickly counting the number of tables, employees and the like, and ask to be seated.<\/p>\n

After peppering your server with questions that run the gamut from \u201cwhat do you think of the company<\/em>?\u201d to \u201chow busy have you been<\/em>?\u201d you order a small salad, a pizza and a Diet Pepsi™.<\/p>\n

The food happens to be very good, and after your server clears your dishes, you ask her if the owner is around. It turns out he is, so she has him stop over to your table.<\/p>\n

The first thing you notice is the strange look he has on his face. It\u2019s almost as if he\u2019s suspicious of something. (Duh\u2026of course he\u2019s suspicious. That\u2019s because your server told him about all of the strange business-related questions you\u2019ve been asking her<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

And before you have the chance to say hi, he asks you who you are. You tell him your name and share that you\u2019re thinking of getting into \u201cthe pizza business<\/em>,\u201d and you just wanted to know a few things. After which he gives you a look that seems to say \u201cquestion-time is over<\/em>.\u201d Awkwardly, you head for the exit.<\/b><\/p>\n

\"driving<\/a><\/p>\n

You’re Driving Back Home<\/h2>\n

On your drive back, you try to figure out why the owner got so weird. After all, you were nice. All you did was ask his server a few questions.<\/p>\n

On the whole, the entire experience was kind of uncomfortable. Maybe a Red Pepper Pizza franchise isn\u2019t for you after all. What Happened?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll tell you what happened. You messed up.<\/p>\n

You should have never visited that franchise location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because you weren\u2019t ready. You didn\u2019t have enough information. You didn\u2019t know what to look for. You didn\u2019t know what questions to ask<\/a> the server and\/or the owner. And because of that, you looked like a fool. An amateur. And you came across like you actually were a detective (or maybe an IRS Agent<\/em>), which got the franchisee paranoid. Can you blame him? (In all honesty, he probably thought you were a potential competitor<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

And as an added bonus, if you do end up pursuing a Red Pepper Pizza franchise, good luck getting answers from that franchisee when you finally do know enough about the franchise opportunity.<\/p>\n

What…you don\u2019t think he\u2019ll recognize you? Talk about uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
