The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics just reported<\/a> the job numbers<\/strong>, and they’re very good.<\/p>\n

Namely, employment increased by 304,000 in January. However, both the un<\/strong>employment rate, at 4.0 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, edged up in January<\/strong>. That’s not<\/em> good; hence, the reason for this blog post…which is about an alarming trend in job numbers I’m starting to see.<\/p>\n

Important:<\/p>\n

  1. The troubling trend I’m seeing may affect you-or someone you know in the near future<\/li>\n
  2. The franchise industry<\/a> is going to be affected by this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Employment Situation: Lay-Offs Are Increasing<\/h2>\n

    According to Job-Hunt.org, “A layoff is often called a ‘reduction in force’ or ‘down-sizing’ and usually more than one employee loses their job<\/em>.” Furthermore, “The cause of the layoff is typically a change in the employer’s financial strength or a new direction for the corporate strategy<\/em>.” Read more<\/a><\/p>\n

    The reason I know this…the reason I’m able to share this disturbing economic trend, is because I’m seeing the data myself. This data is coming directly from one of the questions I pose on the Free Franchise Compatibility Quiz<\/a> I created several years back, and still use today. This is the question:<\/p>\n

    “Why now? What’s happening in your life that’s got you interested in being your own boss<\/em>?”<\/p>\n

    Here are the answers I’m starting<\/em> to see:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    “I lost the corporate job I’ve had for 20 years<\/em>”<\/p>\n

    “My position was eliminated<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

    “I was downsized<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

    “I was recently laid-off<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

    In contrast, the answers to that question (during most of 2018<\/em>) were more of the “I’m ready for a change<\/em>” variety. Or, “I’ve always wanted to own my own business, and the timing seems right<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

    Bottom line?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    In 2018, most of the people who visited my website (because of their interest in franchising<\/em>), and took my quiz, were moving toward<\/strong> business ownership…for very positive reasons. Now the reverse is true<\/strong>. Prospective franchise business owners are moving away<\/strong> from something (corporate America-because they’ve lost their jobs<\/em>), and are starting to look into owning a franchise business-as a career alternative<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    \n

    \"General<\/a><\/h2>\n

    There’s Other Data Too<\/h2>\n

    To be sure, the data I have is only a small window into what’s happening in the U.S. economy…what’s changing. Here’s more on the job numbers.<\/p>\n

    24\/7 Wall St<\/a> writes that “Major companies laid off 52,988 workers in January, up 20.7% from December and up 18.7% from January a year ago<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

    \"ResumeWriters.com\"<\/a><\/p>\n

    For example, General Motors announced<\/a> that it’s planning to cut roughly 14,000 jobs in a bid to trim costs. This is a jarring reflection of the auto industry\u2019s adjustment to changing consumer tastes and sluggish sales.<\/p>\n

    Verizon, BuzzFeed, and Gannett just slashed<\/a> 1,000 media jobs.<\/p>\n

    Wells Fargo plans<\/a> 1,000 U.S. job cuts.<\/p>\n

    947 workers in Wisconsin<\/a> just lost their jobs.<\/p>\n

    Macy’s is closing<\/a> more stores this year.<\/p>\n

    And there are more lay-offs to come.<\/p>\n

    One more thing:<\/strong> our political situation is extremely volatile. And it can<\/em> affect<\/a> the U.S. and world economies.<\/p>\n

    That said, keep your eye on all things White House this year.<\/p>\n

    \"White<\/a><\/p>\n

    About Job Numbers<\/h2>\n

    The job numbers tell us a lot. And in 2018 they were good. Real<\/em> good.<\/p>\n

    For instance, unemployment rates ranged from a 49-year low of 3.7%, to 4.1%.<\/p>\n

    But as I noted in my 2018 Franchise Trends And Predictions article<\/a>, numbers like that can have a huge impact on franchising.<\/p>\n

    In a nutshell, when people are gainfully employed, they generally don’t feel the need to jump ship to start a franchise business<\/a>-or any<\/em> type of business.<\/p>\n

    But this year, the way things are starting off, my gut is telling me that more lay-offs are going to occur. And the franchise industry is going to feel the effects.<\/p>\n
