There\u2019s a perfectly good reason why I haven\u2019t ordered a mushroom pizza<\/b><\/a> from Domino\u2019s\u00ae in at least 30 years. And I don’t understand why anyone<\/em> would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before I tell you what that reason is, I need to go back in time for a couple of paragraphs. You\u2019ll understand why in a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

The Good Stuff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

40 years ago, I dined on several plump Jumbo Sea Scallops arranged in a perfect circle atop Zack<\/strong> Bruell\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> unbelievably rich and sumptuous Raspberry Beurre Blanc sauce. I remember snacking on that dish like it was yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was one of the perks I enjoyed working as a waiter in one of Cleveland\u2019s best and most popular upscale restaurants at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vegas!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

(That\u2019s me, artfully creating a Caesar Salad, tableside, at Hugo\u2019s Cellar<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working at Hugo\u2019s Cellar in Las Vegas in the mid-1980\u2019s had its perks too. Nothing like eating grilled Chilean Sea Bass, Rack of Lamb and Escargot en Croute<\/a><\/strong> to satisfy one\u2019s palate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what does this have to do with pizza I haven\u2019t eaten in 30 years?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Palate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I have extremely uppity taste buds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I was raised by highly-paid nannies fond of cooking (I wasn’t<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

Not because I had food prepared by Chef Angelo, who worked on our family\u2019s little boat (kidding<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n\"RMS<\/a>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

On the contrary, I reason I possess \u201cuppity<\/em>\u201d taste buds is because I worked in several great high-end restaurants. That meant I was able to taste foods that lots of people never<\/em> get to taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when it comes to my occasional desire to eat a mouth-watering mushroom pizza, I never<\/em> order Domino\u2019s. I can\u2019t. Their pizza is too \u201ccommercial<\/em>\u201d for me. That is to say my taste buds wouldn\u2019t know what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pizza is Good!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I love<\/em> pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be gourmet pizza with fancy ingredients, or believe it or not, I\u2019m quite satisfied eating a basic, standard mushroom pizza. But the mushrooms cannot come from a can<\/em>. Why not? Just ask my family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because they\u2019ve been on the receiving end of my occasional 10-minute rants that always begin with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho the heck uses canned mushrooms on pizza these days<\/em>!!?, ending with \u201cGet me the phone number of that joint so I can call to complain to the manager<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So no canned mushrooms!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Domino\u2019s Mushroom Pizza Use Fresh Mushrooms Or Canned Mushrooms?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen scattered atop your favorite pizza, mushrooms have the amazing ability to impart their own distinct flavor, while simultaneously acting as a flavor sponge when paired with other ingredients. Mushrooms mimic the meaty texture of Italian sausage, for instance, and take on a delicate spice when paired with it. For this reason, we<\/a> include fresh mushrooms on several of our Specialty Pizzas, including the Deluxe Feast\u00ae, which features pepperoni, Italian sausage, fresh green peppers, fresh onions, and 100 percent real mozzarella cheese. The fresh mushrooms are like a third meat on this pizza, but at the same time, the mushrooms elevate the flavors of the fresh veggies<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you catch that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe include fresh mushrooms on several of our Specialty Pizzas, including the Deluxe Feast\u00ae, which features pepperoni, Italian sausage, fresh green peppers, fresh onions, and 100 percent real mozzarella cheese<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several<\/em>. There\u2019s the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks like I would have to order a \u201cSpecialty<\/em>\u201d pizza to get fresh mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which means that standard Domino\u2019s pizza’s don’t use fresh mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t actually know. And I kind of don\u2019t want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course I\u2019m not everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m just a guy with high-end tastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not that it matters. Because…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domino\u2019s Is Absolutely Crushing It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Domino\u2019s Pizza franchises<\/strong><\/a> have been making the right moves for several years. Especially with their technology initiatives. And these moves are paying off in a big way. Talk about a franchise business that was ready-made for Covid-19, and the effect<\/b><\/a> it\u2019s had on everyone’s lives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Motley fool, \u201cThe key to the company’s success is the investment Domino’s made a few years ago in technology. In the U.S., 65% of Domino’s orders originate via digital channels including Alphabet’s Google Home, Facebook Messenger, Apple Watch, Amazon Echo, and Twitter, as well as its proprietary ordering app. Internationally, more than 90% of Domino’s markets offer online ordering<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bottom Line?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domino\u2019s Pizza is one of the busiest food franchises on the planet, and it looks like it\u2019s going to continue to be for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, Domino’s has been focused on take-out and delivery<\/strong><\/a> forever, and now they’re offering curbside pickup. Contactless<\/em> curbside pickup. That\u2019s right, you don\u2019t interact with any other humans when you pick up your pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summing It All Up With Something Important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you’re asking yourself what my high-end palate has to do with franchising<\/a><\/strong>, you’re not alone. Other readers are too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, here it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In franchising, it’s not always about what you or I like (or in this case, what you or I don’t like-or won’t order<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it’s about what the masses like. What they’ll order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they’ll pay you<\/strong> for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One last thing. Humor me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When was the last time you ordered a pizza from Domino\u2019s?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How was it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you order a mushroom<\/em> pizza?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
