I\u2019m speaking of your clothes. Stay with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost without exception, most franchise experts agree that the modern business model of franchising can be traced back to an entrepreneurial giant by the name of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/isaac-singer-biography-2821273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaac Merrit Singer<\/a><\/strong>.  As in Singer Sewing Machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 1800&#8217;s Were Tough<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:61% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sweatshop-1890.jpg\" alt=\"garment workers 1880's\" class=\"wp-image-34524 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sweatshop-1890.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sweatshop-1890-320x258.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>(<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweatshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Image<\/a> courtesy of Wikipedia<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latter part of the 1800\u2019s, there was nothing \u201c<em>automatic<\/em>\u201d about clothing manufacturing. Believe it or not, <em>everything <\/em>was stitched together by hand, in not very ideal working conditions. The women who did the sewing worked incredibly long hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, Isaac Singer was basically the first person to patent a practical, widely used sewing machine. Though these machines started to appear on the scene in the mid 1800\u2019s \u2013 and worked pretty well, Singer came up with an idea that made them work even better. <em>A lot better<\/em>. Good enough to sell. But, they were really expensive. At $120 each, Singer sewing machines were out of reach for most Americans. Idea time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A Couple of Fixes From Mr. Singer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of things happened. And they would change everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, one of Singer\u2019s business partners came up with an idea to make these newfangled machines more affordable. His idea; <em>monthly payments<\/em>. Customers would pay for their sewing machines using an installment plan&#8230;the first of its kind. And because of this amazing financing idea<strong>, <\/strong>everyday people could now afford Singer\u2019s sewing machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result (<em>and in short order<\/em>), Singer was able to sell a lot more machines, and that was a great thing. But, he still needed a better distribution method. And being the entrepreneur he was, he figured out just how to do it. Specifically, Singer and his partners came up with a (<em>brilliant<\/em>) licensing arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this scenario, the Singer business team would find business-savvy people who were interested in owning the rights to sell these amazing machines in specific geographical areas (<em>territories<\/em>). In order to get the rights, they\u2019d would need to pay an up-front <em>license fee<\/em>.* <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Today it&#8217;s known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/the-franchise-fee-dont-focus-on-it\">a Franchise Fee<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:42% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"620\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-620x620.jpg\" alt=\"franchise fees\" class=\"wp-image-34527 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-620x620.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/fee.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, in addition to selling the machines, Singer and his team decided that they would  require new licensees to <em>teach<\/em> consumers how to use the machines they had just purchased. Good stuff. <em>Transformational<\/em> stuff. And they sold a lot of licenses. Enough to continue funding the manufacturing of the machines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So now they had both manufacturing <em>and <\/em>distribution. In a nutshell, it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/the-franchise-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distribution network<\/a> in the form of licensees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sound familiar? It should. Because when you buy a franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/definition-of-a-franchise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">you\u2019re essentially buying a license<\/a>. In other words, <strong>franchisees are actually licensees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A Bit More Franchising History: The Early 1900\u2019s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undeniably, the invention of the automobile changed everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:56% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1939-ford-model-t.jpg\" alt=\"model-t automobile\" class=\"wp-image-34528 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1939-ford-model-t.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1939-ford-model-t-320x240.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there was a way for people to get from point A to point B in hours as opposed to an entire day or more. But how could the early automotive pioneers get more automobiles built? And how could they distribute them once they <em>were<\/em> built?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass production was how they got more automobiles built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distribution-wise, these entrepreneurs decided to put togehter Automotive Dealerships-later called&nbsp;<em>franchises<\/em>, to sell their automobiles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The First Two Dealerships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bill (<em>William<\/em>) Metzger was the person who built and opened the first independent automobile dealership in Detroit, Michigan. That happened in 1896. Interestingly enough, he sold&nbsp;<em>electric<\/em>&nbsp;cars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, a businessman by the name of H.O. Koehler opened an automotive dealership. He sold Winton (<em>gas-powered<\/em>) cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence, those two men were <em>the first automotive franchise owners<\/em>. And now Henry Ford and the other businessmen who were manufacturing automobiles had a serious distribution system in place. They put these automobile franchises all over the country. And they\u2019re still around. In fact, there\u2019s probably an automotive franchise within a few miles of your house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FYI:<\/strong>&nbsp;My first exposure to franchising was when I was hired by a local automotive franchise. Eventually, I was promoted to management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Franchise History: A Food Franchise Is Born<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If it wasn\u2019t for a gentleman by the name of Ray Kroc, franchising may not have become what it is today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<a title=\"Sigfried R\u00f6dig, CC BY-SA 4.0 <https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0>, via Wikimedia Commons&#8221; href=&#8221;https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Ray_Kroc_und_J%C3%BCrgen_Knauss.jpg&#8221;><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" alt=\"Ray Kroc und J\u00fcrgen Knauss\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/1\/1a\/Ray_Kroc_und_J%C3%BCrgen_Knauss.jpg\/512px-Ray_Kroc_und_J%C3%BCrgen_Knauss.jpg\"\/><\/a>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>(<em>Ray Kroc is on the right<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kroc&#8217;s McDonald\u2019s restaurants been dotting the landscape near exit ramps of just about every major freeway since the 1960\u2019s. His <em>franchises<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kroc was a man on a mission, and he built one heck of an empire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the techniques having to do with maintaining proper inventory levels, locating and building out real estate for location-based franchises and more, can be traced back to Kroc. If you\u2019d like to read more about McDonald&#8217;s founder, Ray Kroc, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/ray-kroc-the-entrepreneur-who-built-the-mcdonalds-franchise\"><strong>go here<\/strong><\/a>. He was an interesting guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>What is A Franchise? Got it? (<em>You won\u2019t be penalized if you didn\u2019t understand that paragraph. I read it 3 times myself<\/em>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, the franchisor came up with a specific, proprietary idea for a service\/product, and is granting people-franchisees, the right to market it for the franchisor. And since it is the franchisors idea, they require you to market it in a specific way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally-and this is important, it\u2019s <em>their <\/em>system, so they get to write the rule book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>The Rules in Franchising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin with, the rulebook in franchising is the operating manual. That\u2019s what you&#8217;re required to follow when you own and operate the business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In like manner, the other rules come from (<em>the always difficult to read<\/em>) franchise (<em>contract<\/em>) agreement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, not only do you need to do things&nbsp;<em>their<\/em>&nbsp;way, you need to pay an upfront Franchise Fee (<em>license fee<\/em>), plus ongoing royalties. These royalties are usually in the form of a percentage of your revenue, although sometimes the royalty is setup as a flat monthly fee. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, there\u2019s almost always a marketing fee paid monthly along with the royalties (<em>normally 1-2% of sales<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:47% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/percent-620x349.jpg\" alt=\"franchising royalty percentages\" class=\"wp-image-34555 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/percent-620x349.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/percent-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/percent.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I\u2019ve seen royalties that are 4% of sales\u2026all the way to 15% or more. It depends on the type of business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, food franchises and retail franchises are usually at the low end of the royalty percentage scale, while B2B franchises-<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-opportunities-whats-the-real-story-behind-those-business-coaching-franchises\">like coaching franchises<\/a><\/strong>, tend to be on the high-end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Franchise Fees* range from $20,000 up to $75,000 or more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*It&#8217;s important to know that if you decide to work with a franchise &#8220;<em>consultant<\/em>,&#8221; the Franchise Fee you&#8217;re paying (<em>for the franchise he or she matches you too<\/em>) may be higher that normal. This part is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The business model of franchising brings with it a totally different set of issues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Not only must you be somewhat of a risk taker, but you must have absolute faith in the system you are investing in. <\/em>But there&#8217;s more than just having faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those words are from an article I wrote for The U.S. Small Business Administration&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Along with that faith, and a great deal of proper due diligence and fact gathering, there is one other thing that tends to be overlooked. What is often overlooked is what I call, \u2018a franchise personality\u2019. It\u2019s worked for many businesses and many people. But, franchising isn\u2019t the right business model for everyone. As a matter of fact, business ownership in general isn\u2019t for everyone. There\u2019s no perfect scenario. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, learning about the pros and cons of owning a franchise business is important, as it helps put what you may about to do in perspective. Let\u2019s start with the pros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>The Pros Of Owning A Franchise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of positive things that the business model of franchising brings to the table. Here are a few of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systems. There are business systems in place for you to use\u2026to follow. You&#8217;re basically getting a business blueprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training. You\u2019re provided with formal training so you\u2019ll know everything about running your business. You may even get\u00a0<em>pre-training<\/em>\u00a0online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology. Today\u2019s franchisors have access to great technology. And you, as a franchisee, will have access to it too. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of it could be game-changing&#8230;things that local independent competitors in your area can\u2019t touch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing\/Advertising. Your franchisor has (<em>proven<\/em>) marketing plans and advertising templates that will help you get your name out to the public in your geographical territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support. Your franchisor has support systems in place; from in-house personnel to field reps who will visit your franchise business in-person and virtually. Don\u2019t be shy; if you need help, ask! You\u2019re paying for it anyway, in the form of your monthly royalties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real Estate Department. Your franchisor has resources in place to help you with site selection, store design, and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Network. There are other people who, like you, who have invested in the franchise opportunity. They (<em>your fellow franchisees<\/em>) have experienced real-life business issues and can help you out when you have issues you need addressed. And some of your fellow franchisees may end up becoming life-long friends. (<em>Really<\/em>!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you think of a couple more pros of franchise ownership? I can! Look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Equity! When you\u2019re a franchise owner, you have a unique opportunity to create equity in something. Specifically, wouldn\u2019t it be nice to be able to have the opportunity to be the seller of a profitable business? <strong>Your<\/strong> business?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legacy. What if your children could take over your business? Keeping things \u201c<em>in the family<\/em>\u201d sounds like a plan to a lot of people who are looking at owning a franchise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s look at some of the cons* of owning a franchise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Some of the \u201c<em>cons<\/em>\u201d are&nbsp;<em>negative-energy&nbsp;<\/em>items. We don&#8217;t live in a perfect world, and franchising is not perfect!   Here are a few of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You need to pay an upfront Franchise Fee for the right to use the franchisor\u2019s systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0You\u2019ll have to pay a percentage of your revenue to the franchisor on a regular basis (<em>Royalties<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must follow the franchisor\u2019s rules (<em>This is not optional<\/em>!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may need to buy products and services from the franchisor or their approved vendors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to use the franchisors logos and advertising materials (<em>Only<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you sell your business, the franchisor needs to approve your buyer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll (<em>probably<\/em>) be required to pay into a national advertising\/marketing fund<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s continue. You can come up with a product of service of your own and invest an unknown (<em>and<\/em> <em>potentially unlimited<\/em>) amount of your own money into your idea. But, if your business idea <em>does <\/em>work, <em>it\u2019s all yours<\/em>. That\u2019s good. You win!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <em>You can leverage someone else\u2019s systems, tools, and business acumen<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By doing so, you&#8217;ll be able to open and ramp up your business faster than a pure startup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, your focus will be on fast growth, instead of trying stuff again and again until you find something that works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, you\u2019ll know exactly (<em>within reason<\/em>) what your upfront and ongoing costs will be-before you pull the trigger. That\u2019s good, too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To sum things up, the business model of franchising is not for everyone. There are pros and cons to investing in this type of business. And it&#8217;s affected the franchise industry in a big way. There&#8217;s no such thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>&nbsp;What do&nbsp;<strong>you<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201c<em>see<\/em>\u201d when you hear the\u201c<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolroth.com\/blog\/franchise-opportunities-about-those-businesses-in-a-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Business in a box<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u201d phrase? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I see: I see a business that\u2019s already set-up, but it just needs someone to buy it and run it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, if it\u2019s a retail type of business, I see that all the fixtures are in, the shelves are stocked with high-margin products, and the point of sale (<em>POS<\/em>) system is plugged in and ready to go. But not everything! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, when it comes to making money as a franchise owner, it\u2019s not an automatic slam-dunk just because there are business systems in place etc. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A Classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This next one is a classic franchise phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#4 \u201cW<em>hen you buy a franchise<\/em> <em>you&#8217;re really buying a job<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true that if you buy a specific type of franchise, you&nbsp;<em>are<\/em> pretty much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/buying-a-six-figure-job\"><strong>buying yourself a job<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/franchise.sirgrout.com\/tile-and-grout-cleaning-franchise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buy a franchise that specializes in cleaning grout and tile<\/a><\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>you<\/strong>&nbsp;are the one always doing the work, you&nbsp;<em>have<\/em>&nbsp;bought yourself a job. As in finding and awarding new franchises. And everyone in the system benefits from that as the brand becomes more recognized.       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to the question of how much money a franchisor can make, it&#8217;s important to understand where their profits comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Franchise Fees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To start with, believe it or not, Franchise Fees are not a huge source of profit for franchisors, no matter what you may have heard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Case in point: a small percentage of franchisors are more than willing to part with 40% or more of their Franchise Fee to pay franchise consultants to sell franchises for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you read my post about franchise consultants I linked to in &#8220;<em>The Rules In Franchising<\/em>&#8221; section several paragraphs up, you may remember this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Franchisors typically pay franchise consultants a percentage of the upfront franchise fee. As a rule, that percentage is 40-50%<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So, if the franchise fee is $50,000, and the franchisor is paying a franchise consultant a 40% commission, <strong>the consultant* receives a check for $20,000<\/strong>. And he gets it via FedEx about a week after his candidate sends in the check for the Franchise Fee. Not a bad day\u2019s work, eh<\/em>?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*That&#8217;s why franchise consultants\/brokers\/coaches (<em>who all do the same thing, except call themselves different names<\/em>) are willing to offer their services free of charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, even if the franchisor <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> paying a franchise consultant part of the Franchise Fee, the franchisor is using the money for cash flow or is just plowing it back into the business. The real money-the profits&#8230;come from&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"620\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1-620x620.png\" alt=\"franchise royalties\" class=\"wp-image-34507 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1-620x620.png 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/crown-1.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>The Royalties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I want you to imagine being a franchisor with 400 franchise units scattered across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you (<em>as the franchisor<\/em>) charged a 5% royalty, and each of your franchisees had a monthly revenue of $40,000, the figure below is the amount of money (<em>from royalties<\/em>) your bank statement would show every month:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>$1.6 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now multiply that by 12 months and all of a sudden you are bringing in a cool $19.2 million of royalty income a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course you&#8217;ll have to extract your expenses-which are high, but you&#8217;re most certainly a millionaire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:56% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wealthy-entrepreneur-620x824.jpg\" alt=\"wealthy franchisor\" class=\"wp-image-34546 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wealthy-entrepreneur-620x824.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wealthy-entrepreneur-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wealthy-entrepreneur.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Now that was only one example. You&#8217;re welcome to play around with the numbers. Use your imagination. Maybe put in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/dominos-franchise\"> the number of franchise units Domino&#8217;s Pizza has<\/a><\/strong>. If you do that, I promise you&#8217;ll be looking around your house (<em>or office<\/em>) for another calculator. Just to make sure you did the math correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, it&#8217;s important to know that not every franchisor is successful and\/or a millionaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, there are plenty (<em>hundreds<\/em>) of franchisors who only have 5-10 franchisees. And some of those have been stuck at those numbers for years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you can come up with a winning business concept-one that can be transformed into a national brand, with hundreds or even thousands of franchise units in operation, the world is your<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:80% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oyster-620x413.jpg\" alt=\"world is your oyster\" class=\"wp-image-34508 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oyster-620x413.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oyster-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oyster-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oyster.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Franchising And Entrepreneurship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> This section is&nbsp;<em>way<\/em>&nbsp;more important than you think. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because of the word, \u201c<em>Entrepreneur<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let me start out by asking you a simple question: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you end up becoming the owner of a franchise, does that make you an entrepreneur?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want you to really think about your answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because there are dozens of franchisors that use the word \u201c<em>entrepreneur<\/em>\u201d as a major part of their marketing\/advertising programs. That&#8217;s right; the &#8220;<em>E<\/em>&#8221; word may be found in their advertisements, both online and offline.&nbsp;<strong>Don\u2019t fall for it<\/strong>. Don\u2019t think for one minute you\u2019re going to be a (<em>true<\/em>) entrepreneur if you become the owner of a franchise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"tenor-gif-embed\" data-postid=\"4997163\" data-share-method=\"host\" data-width=\"70%\" data-aspect-ratio=\"1.0425531914893618\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/view\/saturday-night-live-snl-justin-timberlake-oh-stop-it-stop-it-gif-4997163\">Saturday Night Live SNL GIF<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/search\/saturdaynightlive-gifs\">Saturdaynightlive GIFs<\/a><\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\" async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Am I Telling You This?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I don\u2019t want&nbsp;you to get roped into something that&#8217;s just not true. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it can be argued that all franchisees enagage in a few entrepreneurial activities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These activities include things like creative ways to solicit customers or perhaps an innovative way to recruit star employees. Anything that involves &#8220;<em>thinking outside the box<\/em>&#8221; to help a franchise business grow and prosper can be deemed entrepreneurial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But remember, a franchise business is a system-based model. It&#8217;s designed to be easily duplicated by others. If the people buying the franchise are&nbsp;<em>too<\/em>&nbsp;entrepreneurial, and don\u2019t follow the system they&#8217;ve invested in closely, the franchise is doomed. Why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because if all the franchisees are doing their own thing-being entrepreneurs, there won\u2019t be much of a brand left. And not much value either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A Friendly Disagreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:54% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"314\" height=\"235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Rieva-And-Joel.jpg\" alt=\"Rieva Lesonsky and Joel Libava\" class=\"wp-image-4623 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>(<em>That\u2019s Rieva Lesonsky and I<\/em>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rieva and I disagree on something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In brief, here\u2019s what my friend, <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/growbizmedia.com\/about-us-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rieva Lesonsky<\/a><\/strong>, the former editor of&nbsp;<strong>Entrepreneur Magazine<\/strong>\u00ae, and the woman who wrote (<em>without hesitation<\/em>), the foreword to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/become-a-franchise-owner\">my hardcover book on buying a franchise<\/a><\/strong>, said about franchisees being entrepreneurs.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>There are many times that franchisees could be-or should be-considered entrepreneurs. Think about franchisees who take a gamble and buy into a newer system. While they might not be risking as much as the person who started the system, there\u2019s still a lot at stake there. In cases like this the franchisor\u2019s name is not that well established, undercutting a big advantage of buying a franchise. And the kinks in the system may not be worked out yet either<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously Rieva is a smart woman. She&#8217;s a true expert on entrepreneurship and small business. Heck-she&#8217;s been doing this longer than I have. It&#8217;s just that in this particular case we disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a matter of fact, Rieva and I have had a friendly disagreement about whether or not a franchisee is an entrepreneur or not, for years.  She thinks franchisees are entrepreneurs. I don\u2019t. In my mind, the franchisors are the entrepreneurs.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one thing is certain; if you think that you\u2019ll be able to use megatons of creativity as a franchisee, a person who owns and operates a business that typically comes with a 300-page operating manual, you\u2019re going to find yourself in a heap of trouble. And you&#8217;ll be extremely frustrated! <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:57% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee-620x414.jpg\" alt=\"frustrated franchisee\" class=\"wp-image-34549 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/aggravated-franchisee.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>My point (<em>which you may want to read over twice<\/em>) is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The person who came up with the concept that is being offered as a franchise is the true entrepreneur! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the person&#8230;the entrepreneur,  who spent a lot of time and money developing a specific business system. One that can be duplicated by others who are willing to buy into the system-and follow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Would you like to give your eyes a rest?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, check this out. For anyone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I\u2019ve personally worked with multi-millionaires, who, because of plain, old-fashioned fear, couldn&#8217;t summon the courage to sign their franchise agreements. And it does take courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s the real story?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to understand that if you decide to pursue franchise ownership, you&#8217;re going to feel a lot of fear.
