Or I wanted to prove something to my dad? I&#8217;m not sure. But whatever the case, I used to hate it when my dad said that. And he said it to me more than once. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you know why, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s because he was right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, I&#8217;m going to show you the right way and the wrong way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/trends-in-franchising\">choose<\/a> the best franchise to invest in. The do&#8217;s and don&#8217;ts. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Today&#8217;s Franchise Buyers Are Overwhelmed! But I have bad news too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are over <strong>4,000<\/strong> different franchises available to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-investors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invest in<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-search-fast-track\">searching<\/a> and investing in the best franchise for you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-business-brokers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quite challenging<\/a>. And I hope you take mine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, choosing the right franchise to buy isn&#8217;t as challenging as you think it will be. Just follow my lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s begin with the do&#8217;s.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Create a &#8220;<em>wants<\/em>&#8221; list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To clarify, come up with a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/kumon-learning-center\">things that you&#8217;d like to have<\/a> in a business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, would you like to invest in a business that needs only a few employees? Or would you prefer to own a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/childrens-photography-franchise\">home-based<\/a> franchise business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing for your list? It&#8217;s easy to use as long as you have the information you need in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, once you\u2019ve completed your net worth statement, you need to come up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-bookkeeping-cpa\">a budget<\/a> for investing in a franchise. But not just any, old, budget. I\u2019m talking about a budget for the initial investment you\u2019ll stick to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Translation:<\/strong> the absolute upper limit of what you\u2019ll write a check for (<em>up front<\/em>), including the Franchise Fee, along with the maximum amount of money you\u2019ll take a small business loan for. Have the talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best time to have &#8220;<em>the talk<\/em>&#8220;&#8230;that all-important discussion with your spouse\/partner about your plans, is before you search for franchise opportunities. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because you need to have his or her support. And sometimes that&#8217;s not easy to get. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, maybe your &#8220;<em>someone<\/em>&#8221; is highly risk-adverse. Just slap your name on it and sell it as your own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can you determine if someone&#8217;s a real expert? Not one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, before you think about this too much, it doesn&#8217;t matter if <em>nothing<\/em> in the Franchise Agreement can be changed or crossed out. It doesn&#8217;t matter. Here&#8217;s what <em>does<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that <em>you&#8217;re not<\/em> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/top-franchise-attorneys\">Franchise Attorney<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enough said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not really. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, if the FDD contains a fair amount of negative stuff-like lots of lawsuits, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchisor-lie\">high franchisee turnover numbers<\/a>, you may be about to choose a lousy franchise to buy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/buying-franchise-disclosure-documents\"> FDD&#8217;s<\/a> and Franchise Agreements are written by super-intelligent Franchise Lawyers. They&#8217;re complicated. Want proof?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From The Subway Franchise Disclosure Document (<em>courtesy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdfi.org\/apps\/franchiseefiling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions<\/a>, and available free to anyone in the United States<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>If you do not own an approved location or lease an approved location directly, then we either designate a real estate leasing company affiliate to enter into the lease or license for the approved location and you sublet or sublicense from our affiliate or we or the real estate leasing company affiliate own the premises and directly lease or license the premises to you. If we or our affiliate act as landlord or licensor, we or our affiliate, as applicable, will derive rental revenues. If we or our affiliate act as sub-landlord or sub-licensor, we or our affiliate, as applicable, may derive rental revenues<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be honest now. Did you read that more than once?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course you did!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/you-need-to-hire-franchise-attorney\">Hire a Franchise Lawyer<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, the 7 things I just showed you, done right, will go a long way towards choosing the best franchise for you to own and operate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I imagine you&#8217;re chomping at the bit to find out what <em>the wrong way<\/em> to choose a franchise business opportunity to invest your money in is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So read on.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Choosing Franchises To Invest In: The Dont&#8217;s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to <em>increase<\/em> your odds of choosing a great franchise to buy and operate, here&#8217;s some advice on what <strong>not <\/strong>to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ignore well-meaning solicited or unsolicited franchise ideas from friends, lovers, or Facebook &#8220;<em>friends<\/em>.&#8221; Examples:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Terry, you want to know what I think you should open? One of those new (fill-in-the-blank) restaurants<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>I hear that Linda&#8217;s Wing Express is hot now. You need to check it out<\/em>! <em>We definitely need another wing place here in Seattle<\/em>&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know what you&#8217;re thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Why should I ignore suggestions from people I know, Mr. Franchise King<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s go with <em>math<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My thinking is there&#8217;s a 1 in 75 chance that folks with zero franchise business opportunity experience would know what&#8217;s &#8220;<em>good<\/em>&#8221; for a geographical area&#8230;or for you to invest in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Don&#8217;t base your choice in a franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/revealed-the-top-467-franchises-for-2021\">solely<\/a> on a &#8220;<em>Top 300 Franchises<\/em>&#8221; list put out by a magazine or a &#8220;<em>Rankings<\/em>&#8221; website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor should you take any of those &#8220;<em>Franchise Reviews<\/em>&#8221; websites too seriously.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first case, an editor&#8217;s opinion of what the &#8220;<em>Top Franchises<\/em>&#8221; in any given year or category are, <em>never<\/em> take into account the business of &#8220;<em>you<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in, who <strong>you<\/strong> are, how much money <strong>you<\/strong> have to invest, what <strong>you&#8217;re<\/strong> good at, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to franchise &#8220;<em>reviews<\/em>,&#8221; I strongly suggest reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-business-reviews-legit\">this eye-opening article<\/a>. It may save you a lot of future headaches.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. If you decide to work with a Franchise Consultant, you need to understand who they work for. Because if you don&#8217;t&#8230;you better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/what-everybody-ought-to-know-about-franchise-consultants\">read this<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, you <em>could<\/em> get lucky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I mean is you may run into a Consultant who finds a good, high-quality franchise to invest in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that end up happening, you need to reread the 7 tips I shared above. They&#8217;ll help you make the right decision on the purchase of a franchise-no matter how you found it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Franchise consultants only represent a tiny sliver of all the franchises available for purchase. So don&#8217;t just look at the franchises <em>they<\/em> recommend. Find some on your own, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Educate Yourself On Franchising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>4A. You need to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-world-of-franchising\">a solid understanding of how franchising works<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you may need a reminder about how rigid the business model it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of you&#8217;re a free-wheelin&#8217;, make up your own rules type of person, buying a franchise will end up being an extremely painful experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise-620x414.jpg\" alt=\"he chose the wrong way to invest in a franchise\" class=\"wp-image-38382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/man-chose-wrong-way-buy-franchise.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For starters, there&#8217;s that 10 lb.*, 325-page franchise operations manual you&#8217;ll need to follow.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*Maybe not 10 lbs., but it&#8217;s thick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the lack of creativity and control you&#8217;ll have, because the franchise business you own was conceptualized by <em>someone else<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus all of those damn rules! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best part?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to sign a contract naming <strong>you<\/strong> as a franchisee for a 10-year period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second-best part?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to pay a percentage of your revenue to corporate every month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And as an added bonus, you&#8217;ll may need to pay another 2% for marketing. And that&#8217;s in addition to your initial investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a business you own and <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait. <em>Don&#8217;t like<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. You don&#8217;t &#8220;<em>like<\/em>&#8221; the business because&#8230;see above. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You need to understand what owning a franchise entails. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you want to be your own boss, you need to invest in the right type of business for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which may or may not end up being a <em>franchise<\/em> business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Make sure you&#8217;re right for franchising by taking my Free Franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/quiz\">Quiz<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4B. Warning: You need to ignore the following two words (<em>that I share in the short video below recorded at Lexicon in Las Vegas<\/em>), that some marketers and salespeople in franchising still use.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gt47QA91FK4\" width=\"625\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n&nbsp;\n<h2>Franchise Ownership: When Will The Profits Come?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Don&#8217;t make the mistake of buying a franchise business thinking you&#8217;ll be able to quickly make money. It&#8217;s not going to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it&#8217;s not a slam on franchising. It&#8217;s just reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reason being is that first you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/break-even-in-a-franchise\">break-even<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it&#8217;s only after your break-even point that <em>some<\/em> profits can start to be realized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, you&#8217;re probably not going to make that six-figure income you&#8217;d hoped for in year #2. Maybe not in year #3 either. This next sentence is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Franchise business ownership is a long-term play<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is to say, don&#8217;t go into a franchise business thinking you&#8217;re going to make or exceed what you&#8217;re used to making in your 1st or probably the 2nd year in business*. It&#8217;s unrealistic and dangerous.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*I&#8217;m referring to a franchise startup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you invest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/buying-existing-franchise\">an existing franchise business<\/a>, it&#8217;s a different story. In a good way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you&#8217;d like to see when you&#8217;ll break-even and become profitable, you need to put together <a href=\"https:\/\/pas.go2cloud.org\/aff_c?offer_id=2&amp;aff_id=1430\">a business plan<\/a>. Doing so will help you a lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pas.go2cloud.org\/aff_c?offer_id=2&amp;aff_id=1256&amp;url_id=111\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/media.go2speed.org\/brand\/files\/pas\/2\/336x280.png\"\/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" border=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;visibility:hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/pas.go2cloud.org\/aff_i?offer_id=2&amp;file_id=489&amp;aff_id=1430\"\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> 6. Don&#8217;t overextend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a net worth of $500k, don&#8217;t look at franchises to buy that require a $750,000 total investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s all I&#8217;ll say. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>It Can Happen To You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>7.
