Maybe a better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/15-essential-questions\">question to ask<\/a> is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How <strong>can<\/strong> you know if someone is an expert on franchising?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <em>that&#8217;s<\/em> what this post is all about. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Franchise Experts Know Franchising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Duh. Of course they know franchising, Joel. That&#8217;s what makes them experts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>how much <\/strong>do they know, and how <strong>do <\/strong>they know.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The obvious answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experience, baby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe they&#8217;ve owned, or have at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/auntie-annes-the-worlds-largest-soft-pretzel-franchise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">managed<\/a> a busy franchise business operation. Either of those would be helpful, right. Let&#8217;s check that box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have these experts <em>sold<\/em> franchises?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, that <em>may<\/em> help them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-world-of-franchising\">understand the business side<\/a>-especially the numbers. But is that in itself enough to make them a franchise expert? Nah. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Classroom Knowledge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class-620x414.jpg\" alt=\"image of entrepreneurial college students with professor\" class=\"wp-image-41339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/business-college-class.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Have these &#8220;<em>experts<\/em>&#8221; taken formal classes on business and franchising? Written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wowessays.com\/research-paper\/franchisees-research-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research papers<\/a>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, would doing those things make them a franchise business expert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I consider <a href=\"https:\/\/weatherhead.case.edu\/faculty\/scott-shane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scott Shane<\/a> to be a franchise expert. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s because he&#8217;s written about all things entrepreneurial for years. Plus, he&#8217;s frequently called upon by <a href=\"https:\/\/smallbiztrends.com\/2015\/10\/largest-franchise-systems-growth-study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top-level publications<\/a> to share his knowledge. And he often includes franchising statistics&#8230;some of which he&#8217;s put together himself, using proven scientific research techniques.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep that in mind as I go back to folks who have studied franchising in a classroom setting being franchise experts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By and large, unless their focus is on <em>teaching<\/em> and <em>writing<\/em> serious research papers about franchising (<em>with some entrepreneurial content mixed in<\/em>), it&#8217;s not a box I&#8217;m comfortable checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This next part is important.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Who Calls Them Franchise Experts?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not know this, but some people <em>call<\/em> themselves experts. And not just in franchising. From <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jeffgoins\/calling-yourself-an-expert-doesnt-make-you-one-becfd4d34292\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeff Goins<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An author self publishes her first book on Amazon and is now considered a \u201cbestselling author\u201d and a \u201c<em>book marketing expert<\/em>\u201d who is entitled to tell other people how to launch their own bestsellers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An entrepreneur makes a few good decisions and suddenly becomes a \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/coaching-franchise\">business coach<\/a><\/em>\u201d to an eager audience, ready to make it big.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A guy with a \u201c<em>dad bod<\/em>\u201d drops 20 pounds in a few months, posts his results to Facebook, and\u2014whammo!\u2014he\u2019s another fitness expert accepting applications for coaching clients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks, Jeff (<em>who&#8217;s a legitimate expert on writing<\/em>!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>Jeff and I have exchanged Tweets etc. in the past. He&#8217;s one of the good guys. And I know his sister, Rhea, too. She&#8217;s another class act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, Jeff&#8217;s right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of so-called, or in this case, &#8220;<em>self-called<\/em>&#8221; experts.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A List Of Self-Called Experts On Franchising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s where I get down and dirty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joellibava\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>, and type &#8220;<em>franchise experts<\/em>&#8221; in the search box, <strong>431,000<\/strong> experts magically appear. That&#8217;s nuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does that mean every person listed an authentic, proven franchise expert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they&#8217;re using the word &#8220;<em>expert<\/em>&#8221; somewhere in their profile and\/or in their introduction. Along with these specific words. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Franchise Expert<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Broker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Consultant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Coach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Development Manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Owner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business Development Expert<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entrepreneur Expert<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3>This is getting scary. More&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Franchise Specialist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Marketing Expert<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Career Ownership Coach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise Matchmaking Consultant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/consultations\">Franchise Advisor<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-investors\">Investor<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>My LinkedIn research indicates that a lot of people call themselves franchising experts. But are they? Check out what I found.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>A Massive Lack Of Franchise Business Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a lot of cases, the people I found on LinkedIn who called themselves franchise experts hadn&#8217;t been in franchising for long periods of time. <strong>I&#8217;m talking less than 5 years<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, a fair number of them came from <em>other<\/em> industries before they joined the franchise industry. <strong>Totally unrelated industries<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like manufacturing, travel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/do-not-buy-a-franchise-college\">college<\/a> enrollment, sales, and more. Lots more. Industries and careers not related to the franchise industry at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But is that a bad thing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s because we&#8217;re always learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people<\/em>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Will Rogers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And franchising <em>can<\/em> be learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not in two years time, though.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what about franchise &#8220;<em>consultants<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are they experts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s see.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>Are Franchise Consultants And Brokers Experts?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"tenor-gif-embed\" data-postid=\"15612170\" data-share-method=\"host\" data-aspect-ratio=\"1\" data-width=\"60%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/view\/i-want-an-expert-expert-demanding-support-specialist-gif-15612170\">I Want An Expert Demanding GIF<\/a>from <a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/search\/i+want+an+expert-gifs\">I Want An Expert GIFs<\/a><\/div> <script type=\"text\/javascript\" async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/what-everybody-ought-to-know-about-franchise-consultants\">franchising consultants, brokers, and coaches<\/a> are experts. It depends on their years of service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, a franchise broker with one year of experience is NOT a franchise expert. No way-no how. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s impossible, unless the broker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rontaylor-waymaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">came from the franchise industry<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about a franchise consultant\/broker with 5 years of experience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have they written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchise-writing\">well-researched articles on franchising<\/a>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are they being quoted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legitimate<\/a> news and small business\/franchise websites?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have they written a book on franchising?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do they sound like they know what they&#8217;re talking about?<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>The Good News About Franchising Experts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <em>I<\/em> tell you someone is a franchise expert, you don&#8217;t have to believe me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone is telling you <em>they&#8217;re<\/em> a franchise expert, you don&#8217;t have to believe <em>them<\/em> either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s because you can found out for yourself in about a half hour&#8217;s time. And it&#8217;s easy to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Just Google their name<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then see what comes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now get more specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google their name + &#8220;<em>books<\/em>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And try their name + &#8220;<em>articles<\/em>.&#8221; Or + &#8220;<em>news<\/em>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spend a half hour or so checking out the results.
