On Friday, I officially signed a deal with the fine folks over at Wiley Publishing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I’m going to be writing a book on franchising<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

I remember when I called my wife at work and said, “Jeannine, I just got a call from the folks at Wiley Publishing. They want me to write a franchise book<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

Jeannine’s words; “I can’t believe it Joel. Amazing<\/span><\/em>.”<\/p>\n

That’s right, damnit! All the writing I’ve been doing on this<\/em> blog, (over 1,000 posts<\/em>) as well as on Small Business Trends<\/strong>, OPEN Forum by American Express<\/strong>, SBA.gov<\/strong>, and some others, is finally starting to pay off.<\/p>\n

Did I mention…<\/p>\n


\nAll the time I’ve been spending on Twitter<\/strong>, LinkedIn<\/strong>, Facebook<\/strong>, bizSugar<\/strong>, and other assorted social networking sites the past few years?<\/p>\n

My wife and daughter have been really, really supportive<\/span><\/strong>, even though they don’t really understand why I’ve been spending most of my waking hours Tweeting, linking and basically connecting with lots of people like a crazed animal. (I guess they understand now, huh?<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Words<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lots of them are going to be typed in this trusty keyboard<\/strong><\/p>\n

in the coming months. Lots. (Enough words to freak me out, a bit.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Don’t worry, Lauren<\/strong>. (My editor and confidant at Wiley.<\/em>) I won’t go over the edge.<\/p>\n

One of the first folks I emailed was my friend, supporter, and fellow Clevelander, Jim Kukral<\/strong>. He was really happy for me, and he asked what I was writing about<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I told him that “I was going to be authoring a book about lake-effect snow<\/em>.” (I’m still not sure if he liked my sarcasm there, or not.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

I shared as much as I could about this new project with 30 or so folks in my immediate circle during the past month, and waited until last Friday before I started to publically announce it.<\/p>\n

The first folks who heard about my book deal were my newsletter subscribers<\/strong>. I feel that if you’re going to agree to allow my newsletter into your email inbox once a week, that it should be worth a little something extra.<\/p>\n

My book is going to be about franchise ownership…or rather how to go about choosing and researching a franchise business, so that the experience of owning a franchise can turn out to be profitable and enjoyable.<\/p>\n

It’s time for a straightforward guide on choosing and researching a franchise to be written. Right?<\/em><\/p>\n

Actually, I’m going to rephrase that….<\/p>\n

It’s time for some franchise truths.<\/strong> I’ve been telling it like it is for several years now. I’ve tried to protect would-be franchise owners from losing their money in lousy franchise concepts. I’ve had no problem calling out franchisors<\/a><\/strong> that have had a history of selling franchises to people that they never should have.<\/p>\n

I<\/strong> can’t stand when hard-working people are taken advantage of.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I’m going to write the book that should have been written a long time ago.<\/strong><\/span> I’m going to show people how to buy a franchise in such a way that it will be really, really hard for them to fail in the franchise business they end up choosing.<\/p>\n

I’m going to help prospective franchise owners not lose money. Damnit.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
