Such as;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Railroad crossings<\/li>\n<li>Town squares with diagonal parking spaces<\/li>\n<li>Small cafes<\/li>\n<li>Country roads (<em>with lots of roadkill<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Hardware stores<\/li>\n<li>Local department stores<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>I also think of my own time spent living in small towns.<\/h2>\n<p>The first one was <a title=\"cities in iowa \" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Independence,_Iowa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Independence, Iowa<\/a>. My first job in radio broadcasting led me to this farm town. With a population of 3,000 or so, it was truly a rocking town. (<em>Well, it was for the farmers who harvested acres and acres of the best corn around<\/em>!) I remember a few of the businesses there; K-Bob&#8217;s Steak House was one of them, and it&#8217;s where Thanksgiving dinner took place while I lived in Iowa. I don&#8217;t remember seeing any <a title=\"define a franchise business\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/definition-of-a-franchise\">franchise businesses<\/a> there, but there may have been.<\/p>\n<p>The second small town I lived in was <a title=\"andrews texas\" href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewstx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Andrews, Texas<\/a>-also part of my days as a radio announcer. Located in what&#8217;s known as the Permian Basin, the economy in Andrews\u00a0revolved\u00a0around oil. I worked at the only rock station in the area, and my show, &#8220;<em>The JL Night Bash<\/em>&#8221; was on the air 6 days a week from 7-midnight. I had an absolute blast there. And, there<em> were<\/em> a couple of franchise businesses there.<\/p>\n<p>One of our top advertisers was the local <a title=\"sonic drive in franchise locations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sonicdrivein.com\/locator\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sonic Drive-In<\/a>, which is still there after <em><strong>30 years<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The things I saw while living in these two small towns are mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Small-Town-Rules-Businesses-Connected\/dp\/0789749203\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;keywords=small%20town%20rules&amp;tag=thefrakin-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;qid=1342275095&amp;camp=1789&amp;sr=1-1&amp;creative=9325\" target=\"_blank\">Small Town Rules: The Book<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=thefrakin-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6898\" title=\"small town rules book\" alt=\"the small town rules book\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/small-town-rules-book.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"becky mccray website\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smallbizsurvival.com\/\"><strong>Becky McCray<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"barry moltz\" href=\"https:\/\/barrymoltz.com\/\"><strong>Barry Moltz<\/strong><\/a> co-authored this terrific new book, and they sent me a review copy. (<em>They&#8217;re both friends of mine-we met at Blogworld a few years ago<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>I just finished the book, and I learned several things&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Save money for a rainy day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Small towns-especially ones that are farming communities, can&#8217;t control what does or doesn&#8217;t come out the the sky. It&#8217;s all about the weather, and farmers have to have a lot of funds put away for when things don&#8217;t go their way. It&#8217;s what their parents and grandparents did, so it&#8217;s what they do.<\/p>\n<p>2.<strong> Networking <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Small town business owners are networkers. Lots of them belong to their local Rotary clubs, Kiwanis clubs, and of course, their hometown chambers of commerce. And, they proudly display signs stating that they are members of these organizations in their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Doing whatever it takes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Becky, who lives in a small Oklahoma town, shares a story in the book about some lean times she experienced while growing up. Her parents owned a trucking company, and during an especially tough year, (<em>when their trucks weren&#8217;t being used much<\/em>) they ended up chopping some wood, which they then sold to stores in town-<em>to make ends meet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There are several important lessons included in their book. Most of them have to do with business.
