I received a couple of great comments, and they reminded me that freedom doesn&#8217;t come without a sacrifice. You have to earn the right to be able to have some freedom to come and go as a franchise owner, or whatever else it is that you define freedom with.<\/p>\n<p>In case you missed it, here&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"\/popular-reasons-for-buying-a-franchise-part-2\">Part 2<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is another popular reason people that people decide to move away from a &#8220;<em>job<\/em>,&#8221; and move towards small business ownership?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually a close cousin to &#8220;freedom.&#8221; It&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial Black;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; color: #c00000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial Black;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; color: #c00000;\">Control<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial Black;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px; color: #c00000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You certainly don&#8217;t have much control when you&#8217;re working for someone else.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Of course, that depends on what type of job you have, and how cool your boss is.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>I know you want more.<\/p>\n<p>In a typical job, there are several things that you can&#8217;t control;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Days of the week that you work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Your salary\/bonus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Your boss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Your work environment\/location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Plus, many many, other things.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Arial Black;\"><br \/>\nThis always angered me<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure if you ever ran across this in a job, but I couldn&#8217;t stand the fact that I couldn&#8217;t just pick my vacation week. (<em>Or weeks<\/em>) I always had to wait for a couple of other folks to choose their weeks, and then I got to choose mine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/pas.go2cloud.org\/aff_c?offer_id=2&amp;aff_id=1430&amp;file_id=389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.go2speed.org\/brand\/files\/pas\/2\/liveplan_2020_336x280.png\" width=\"336\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pas.go2cloud.org\/aff_i?offer_id=2&amp;file_id=389&amp;aff_id=1430\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;visibility:hidden;\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The example above may seem like a<em> little<\/em> thing, but for me it wasn&#8217;t. What really bothers you, as an employee? (<em>Just leave a comment after the end of this post.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial Black;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br \/>\nFranchise control<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A very common question that&#8217;s asked of me during one of my presentations on franchising, has to do with the amount of control, <em>or lack of<\/em>, that one has as a franchise owner. It&#8217;s a great question.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an important thing to think about, before you embark on your franchise search. Especially, if you&#8217;re thinking of becoming a franchise owner, because you absolutely<a href=\"\/do-you-hate-your-job-maybe-you-should-just-buy-a-franchise\"> <strong>hate your job<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The franchisor has more control than you<\/strong>. They<em> have<\/em> to.<\/p>\n<p>If every franchisee in a franchise system was left to do his or her own thing, it wouldn&#8217;t be a franchise. It would be a nightmare.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Demonic_clown\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341ca59e53ef0133f49ab41a970b \" src=\"https:\/\/thefranchiseking.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341ca59e53ef0133f49ab41a970b-320wi\" style=\"width: 237px; height: 393px;\" title=\"Demonic_clown\"><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the franchisor controls;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your cost of entry (<em>Franchise Fee<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Royalties (<em>How much you&#8217;ll pay the franchisor every month<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Marketing\/advertising strategy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Product\/service offerings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Software\/technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hours of operation\/days open for business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Who else becomes a franchisee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, you see, you don&#8217;t have that much control.<\/p>\n<p>Or do you?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Arial Black;\"><br \/>\nYou&#8217;re the boss<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Of course you have things that you control. You&#8217;re the boss. You&#8217;re the owner. You&#8217;re the one who wrote the check. you&#8217;re the franchisee.<\/p>\n<p>You control who you hire, your inventory, the way your store looks, (<em>cleanliness<\/em>) your business checking account, your payroll, your time spent working, (<em>and playing<\/em>) and your growth.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: Arial Black;\"><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s true<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you decide to buy a franchise business, you just made a controlled decision. Of course it&#8217;s true that you&#8217;re actually buying someone else&#8217;s idea, someone else&#8217;s model. But, <em>they&#8217;re<\/em> not opening up the door to your business every day. <strong>You are<\/strong>. You&#8217;re in charge.<\/p>\n<p>In summation, don&#8217;t let anyone tell you that when you buy a franchise, you&#8217;re not in control.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re just not in control of <em>everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I think that you have a lot more control when you&#8217;re a franchise owner, than when you were an employee.
