Do You Buy Local?<\/h2>\n

My friend, Chris Brogan<\/b>, consistently pisses me off.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because he\u2019s always writing thought-provoking posts, and I\u2019m not always in the mood to think.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a snippet from a post he wrote on local small business<\/b>:<\/p>\n

\u201cI went into a running store to pick up a windbreaker kind of thingy because evidently wearing a spring jacket means I will sweat like a prisoner. The guy who runs the shop remembered selling me my shoes (almost a year ago). That feeling, of being remembered, equals good to me. But maybe not to everyone<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris Brogan\u2019s post<\/a> really got me thinking.<\/p>\n

And then it got me aggravated.<\/p>\n

Face To Face Purchases Are Disappearing<\/h2>\n

Pretty soon, seeing local <\/b>hand to hand business transactions (the legal kind<\/i>) are going to be about as common as seeing one of these cruising through your local park.<\/p>\n

You…me\u2026 all of us, are not buying products and services from people who know us (in person<\/i>) as much as we used to.<\/p>\n

We can blame Jeff Bezos of Amazon<\/strong>, and Tony Hsieh of Zappos<\/strong> for that.<\/p>\n

And the internets.<\/p>\n

And, the credit card companies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Choking The Life Out Of A Small Business Is Easy<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s become waaaay<\/em> too easy for us to buy stuff online.<\/p>\n

And, because we don\u2019t always have to pay sales tax on our purchases, it can<\/em> be cheaper to buy online.<\/p>\n

Unless The US House of Representatives passes this<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, easy is nice. Getting products and services cheaper is nice, too.<\/p>\n

But, it\u2019s not so nice for our local small business owners.<\/p>\n

Amazon is choking the life out of them.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

And, it\u2019s not just local businesses<\/b> that are hurting.<\/p>\n

Or, extinct.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Border\u2019s<\/h2>\n

I was really bummed out when Border\u2019s closed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I really liked it there. Good coffee. Good selection of books.<\/p>\n

Good atmosphere.<\/p>\n

A short time later, another large bookstore in our area closed up shop.<\/p>\n

That<\/i> bummed me out even more.<\/p>\n

Guess where I buy (and sell<\/i>) my books<\/a>, now?<\/p>\n

Can We Ever<\/em> Go Back?<\/h2>\n

Can the online shopping and buying trend be reversed?<\/p>\n

Can we save local small businesses? Can we stop choking the life out of them?<\/p>\n

Are you<\/i> willing to?<\/p>\n

Are you<\/i> willing to drive all over town around the holidays to shop local?<\/p>\n

Are you<\/i> willing to leave your computer screen to drive into town-and buy a product or service from a local business owner?<\/p>\n

Why?<\/p>\n

Or, why not?<\/p>\n

What Can Local Business Owner\u2019s Do?<\/h2>\n

Is there anything that local business owners can do to curb our appetites for easy peasey?<\/p>\n

Can franchise owners in your neighborhood<\/a> come up with some cool ideas to combat online purchases?<\/p>\n

Or, is our buying behavior been forever changed?<\/p>\n
