Dry-cleaning plants had to be located quite a distance from storefronts. Customers would drop off their cleaning at the store, and have to wait several days for their garments to be cleaned and pressed. (B<i>ecause their clothes had to be transported to those faraway facilities.<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>That is until Henry Martin discovered a non-flammable solvent.<\/p>\n<p>The non-flammable dry-cleaning solvent that Martin discovered enabled dry cleaning plants to be located <i>on-premises<\/i>, which speeded things up for both the customer and the store owner. The use of this new solvent was adopted throughout the entire dry-cleaning industry\u2026and, One-Hour Martinizing was born.<\/p>\n<h2>The Martinizing Dry-Cleaning Franchise<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/martinizing-cleaners-75-years\">Martinizing<\/a> is the largest and best known dry cleaning services franchise and brand in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>(<i>Disclosure: When I was a franchise broker, the brokerage franchise that I was with had a contract with Martinizing, and they were part of our portfolio of companies that we were allowed to present to our franchise candidates. My late father, Jerry Libava, helped place several of their franchisees<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>A little-known fact:<\/strong> Being the owner of a dry-cleaning franchise is <a title=\"franchise excitement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/there-are-certainly-some-exciting-opportunities-in-franchise-ownership-out-there-my-pulse-rate-is-increasing-just-thinking-a\">filled with pulse-pounding excitement<\/a> every single day.<\/p>\n<p>Not.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, <i>owning and operating a dry-cleaning business is pretty darn boring<\/i>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You collect dirty clothes.<\/li>\n<li>You tag them and bag them.<\/li>\n<li>You give your customer a receipt.<\/li>\n<li>You give the dirty clothes to your employees. I understand.<\/p>\n<p>But, I want you to wait another minute or so before you contact a dry-cleaning franchisor. Please try to hold yourself back. Let\u2019s talk about this \u201c<i>doing something over and over again<\/i>\u201d thing.<\/p>\n<p>A question: Would you be a little more excited about owning a dry-cleaning franchise if I told you that part of your role as the owner would be to <strong>collect money over and over again<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m talking about collecting money that becomes mostly <i>yours<\/i> because of the high margins in the dry-cleaning business. Check this out\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that it costs you-<i>the customer<\/i>, $3.00 for a men\u2019s dress shirt to be cleaned and pressed.<\/p>\n<p>How much do you think it costs <i>the dry cleaner<\/i> to clean and press it?<\/p>\n<p><b>The Answer:<\/b> Not much.<\/p>\n<p>The dry-cleaning business operates on very large margins.<\/p>\n<p><em>That<\/em> excites a lot of people.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of those people own <em>several<\/em> dry-cleaning operations\u2026stores.<\/p>\n<p>Franchises.<\/p>\n<h2>Is This Franchise Right For You?<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019re going to need a good bit of money to own a Martinizing franchise. Dry-cleaning equipment is expensive.You\u2019ll have to have a net worth of at least $400,000 with liquid assets of $125,000. That\u2019s because the total investment for <em>one<\/em> Martinizing franchise is almost $400,000. That\u2019s an awful lot of money to invest considering that you\u2019ll be working at the counter of your franchise, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>But not forever.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, you won\u2019t always be doing the actual labor. You\u2019ll move into more of an operational role as your business grows. You\u2019ll mange the store. You\u2019ll manage the expenses. And, hopefully you\u2019ll be scouting out new locations to open more stores.<\/p>\n<p><b>Pros:<\/b> 450+ franchise units in operation. Martinizing is a well-known brand, and has dominated the dry-cleaning industry for years. A strong management team is in place&#8230;they run a tight ship and provide a lot of tools for franchisees. It&#8217;s a high-margin business that\u2019s only open 6 days a week. Multi-unit ownership is encouraged.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cons:<\/b> High cost of entry. Multi-unit owners need to have significant financial resources. The dry-cleaning business is looked upon by most as a really boring business.
