When you make a sale you\u2019re up. When you don\u2019t, you\u2019re down. It\u2019s pretty tough to stay centered. &nbsp;As humans, <i>not<\/i> allowing our emotions to get in the way of our everyday lives is almost impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Until we\u2019re older and wiser.<\/p>\n<p>But, there\u2019s something else that can make a sales job more challenging than it needs to be\u2026or should be. Do you know what it is?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a boss who plays financial head games with you<\/strong>. I had one. It sucked.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>An Experiment<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a&nbsp;blood pressure cuff nearby, go ahead and grab it. It\u2019s time for an experiment.<\/p>\n<p>Go ahead and strap your&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B005FTK7F4\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B005FTK7F4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=thefrakin-20\">Digital Blood Pressure Monitor<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;on.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thefrakin-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B005FTK7F4\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>Is it on? Okay\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m going to show you four words. After you read them, I want you to look to see if your blood pressure goes up.<\/p>\n<p>Here they are:<\/p>\n<p>Scroll down\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><b>Shopping for a new car<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Well: Did your blood pressure go up?<\/p>\n<p>Unless your last <strong><a title=\"car shopping\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/shopping-for-a-franchise-business\">car buying experience<\/a><\/strong> when really, really, well, your blood pressure probably went up.<\/p>\n<p>(<i>You don\u2019t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have<\/span> to strap on a blood pressure cuff. I\u2019m just trying to make a point<\/i>.)<\/p>\n<p><b>The point: <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most car buying experiences aren&#8217;t very enjoyable for consumers. Sometimes, they\u2019re real nightmares. And blood pressure raisers. Becki focuses on giving prospective Audi owners a VIP purchasing experience.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Keep reading.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>From Both Sides<\/h2>\n<p>I used to get it from <i>both<\/i> sides.<\/p>\n<p><b>Side 1:<\/b> The people that came into the <strong><a title=\"automotive franchise opportunities\" href=\"https:\/\/www.franchisedirect.com\/automotivefranchises\/7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automobile franchise<\/a><\/strong> where I worked.<\/p>\n<p>They were usually:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loaded for bear<\/li>\n<li>Ready for a fight<\/li>\n<li>Paranoid<\/li>\n<li>Overly cautious<\/li>\n<li>Angry<\/li>\n<li>In a hurry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was my job to calm them down, and sell them a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><b>Side 2: <\/b>The Management<\/p>\n<p>They wanted me to sell lots of cars.<\/p>\n<p>There was a sales manager; he was my immediate boss. And of course there was the franchise owner-<b><i>The Signer of the Paychecks<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The sales managers I had were usually pretty cool. One of them spent a lot of one-on-one time with me\u2026in order to help me get better at sales. I looked to him as my mentor. Heck, I included him in my hardcover franchise book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/1118094026\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1118094026&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=thefrakin-20&amp;linkId=d547af798e7f6b87b94cf05519de0ec4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Become a Franchise Owner!: The Start-Up Guide to Lowering Risk, Making Money, and Owning What you Do<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thefrakin-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1118094026\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>But, most of the franchise <em>owners<\/em> I worked for were jerks.<\/p>\n<p>One of them really stands out-because he was so <i>cheap<\/i>. I\u2019m not sure <i>why<\/i> he was cheap; he certainly had a pretty good gig. The jerkface made a lot of money.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this person being unbelievably cheap, he consistently played head-games with the sales staff. But, before I share what I mean about head games, let me explain a little about how automobile salespeople are paid.<\/p>\n<p>Automobile salespeople don\u2019t tend to make a lot of money when they sell a new car or truck. They rely on volume bonuses to help them have a shot at making a pretty good living.<\/p>\n<p>Bonuses are usually a few hundred dollars when you hit specific unit sales levels. For example, a $300 bonus may be offered when you hit 10 sales for the month. If you hit 15 units, you may get $500, 20 units in a month-maybe you\u2019d get a check for $1,000.&nbsp;Are you with me so far?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Do You Work For A JerkFace?<\/h2>\n<p>I can\u2019t stand head games.<\/p>\n<p>But, I had to deal with them for years as a young automotive salesperson.<\/p>\n<p><i>Basically, <b>I worked for a franchise owner who tried to find ways to not pay bonuses<\/b><\/i><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right; he tried to <em>avoid<\/em> paying us bonuses.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I used to get really nervous during the last week of the month.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, I never knew if I would be able to hit my volume bonus levels. Part of the reason I always got nervous was because of split deals. Let me explain\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If one of my customers came in on my day off, another salesperson would end up taking care of them. If he or she ended up selling them a car, we would split the deal. That meant that I would receive half the commission and half of the unit sale. So, I may have 14 \u00bd unit sales going into the last couple days of the month&#8230;half a unit away from a bonus. Got it?<\/p>\n<p>So, I\u2019d scramble around\u2026trying to get one more sale so I\u2019d bust the 15 (<em>or 20<\/em>) unit mark to get my bonus for that month.&nbsp; Here\u2019s where it gets interesting.<\/p>\n<p>The owner would get tons of referrals. Lots of people came in asking for him by name. He would greet them, and usually, sometimes, <i>inconsistently<\/i>, turn them over to one of the salespeople. That person would get the deal if they bought a car.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unless it was the end of the month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If it was getting to be the end of the month, the owner would be very careful about who he turned his referrals over to. If he happened to <i>like<\/i> you that month, maybe you\u2019d get the customer-and the sale, if the customer bought. But, if he&nbsp;<i>didn&#8217;t<\/i>&nbsp;like you that month-especially if he knew (<i>he always knew<\/i>) that you were on the cusp of hitting your volume bonus, he would:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Have another salesperson take care of his referral<\/li>\n<li>Take care of the customer himself, totally avoiding paying <i>any<\/i> salesperson<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The bottom line?<\/p>\n<p>It was <em>always<\/em> a roll of the dice. It really depended on his mood that day.<\/p>\n<p>But, his behavior was always more unpredictable towards the end of the month. That\u2019s when he really amped-up his head games. He really messed with our heads, and I believe in my heart that he did it for one reason\u2026and one reason only:<\/p>\n<p><b>He really <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">didn&#8217;t<\/span>&nbsp;want to have to pay his salespeople a bonus<\/b>. The same people that helped him live (<i>and maintain<\/i>) his high-end lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention how pissed-off the sales manager was when one of his salespeople missed a bonus because of something the owner did or didn&#8217;t do? He always felt horrible about what the owner did, and sometimes he would get into a yelling match with the jerkface about the games he\u2019d play with us.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine owning a multi-million dollar business and purposely trying to find ways to <i>not <\/i>pay your salespeople (<em>who worked on commission<\/em>) a few hundred dollars extra for a job well done?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Push<\/h2>\n<p>IS having a jerkface for a boss causing you to look into other <a title=\"be your own boss franchising\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefranchiseking.com\/franchising-good\"><strong>ways to make a good livin<\/strong><\/a>g?<\/p>\n<p>Have you had a string of jerky bosses in your career-and you\u2019re just <i>done<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>Or, do you <em>need<\/em> to have a boss that&#8217;s a real jerk in order for you to start seriously considering being your own boss?<\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe it\u2019s the push you need.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maybe working for a jerk will end up being a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n<p>My question to you is this:<\/p>\n<p>Do you want to be an employee for the rest of your life?<\/p>\n<p>Do you want to work for a jerk?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Maybe<\/h2>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019re stronger than you think.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe <strong><a title=\"take a franchise course\" href=\"https:\/\/franchisebusinessuniversity.com\/before-you-buy-a-franchise\/\">you should learn how to not work for a jerk<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you <i>do<\/i> have the power to take the steps necessary to <strong>be your own boss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It could beat working for a jerkface.<\/p>\n<p>Image courtesy of [image creator name] \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedigitalphotos.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FreeDigitalPhotos.net<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to work for a real jerkface.
