Talk about dominating a market!<\/p>\n

In this post, I’m going to show you how franchises dominate America’s freeway exits<\/strong>, and why it’s important they do.<\/p>\n

Driving And Doing Business Along Interstate Exits<\/h2>\n

A recent 15 hour drive on I-77 (to get to our vacation destination<\/i>) proved to be one heck of a wake-up call about businesses that dominate a market. In this case, the interstate exit market.<\/p>\n

Locally-owned and operated franchise businesses don\u2019t \u201cdot the landscape<\/i>\u201d on the freeway and turnpike exits that I passed-and sometimes used; they own it<\/i>. And we did business with several of them along the way.<\/p>\n

And \u201cowning it<\/i>\u201d is what franchising does best. The business model is so darn powerful<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The business of franchising provides opportunities<\/a> for people that want to own what they do. It also offers franchisors that are hell-bent on dominating a market<\/b>-do so.<\/p>\n

Gas<\/h2>\n

You\u2019re going to need gas-there\u2019s no getting around it, unless you\u2019re interested in buying what my friend, Barry Moltz<\/a>, tested out.<\/p>\n

And, when you\u2019re driving a long distance, and you need food or gas (not food that will <\/i>give you gas<\/i>) seeing road signs like the one pictured below are very positive things.<\/p>\n

It turned out that 90% of all the gas stations we encountered on our trip were BP franchises<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They dominated the market. They dominated the interstate exits of the part of America that we drove through<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It was a good feeling to see BP\u2019s green logo on so many freeway road signs\u2026it was comforting.<\/p>\n

Think about it; you\u2019re driving your family\u2026the ones you love, a long way. Not only do you want to make sure that you\u2019re driving safely, but you want to make sure that they\u2019re safe when they\u2019re out of the car, too.<\/p>\n

A question:<\/p>\n

Would you feel better exiting the freeway to get gas or use the \u201cfacilities<\/i>\u201d at a BP station or “Ted\u2019s Filling Station<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Importance Of Branding<\/h2>\n

Franchise salespeople always talk about \u201cThe Brand<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Branding is an important part of the mix<\/a>, and one reason why the thought of owning a franchise is really attractive. It\u2019s also very attractive to consumers who are sometimes looking for the familiar. Like when they\u2019re travelling.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why every McDonald\u2019s restaurant we visited was crowded. And, they were located at almost every exit that had food. It was amazing. Ray Kroc\u2019s vision of having his restaurant located by every freeway has turned into a reality in most areas of the country. I wish I could have met him. It would have been great to shake his hand and hear his voice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The executives in Oak Brook, Illinois are focused on making sure that the look and feel of their restaurants is consistent across the board, and for the most part, they\u2019ve succeeded. That\u2019s one of the reasons why they\u2019re so successful. Consumers know what they\u2019re going to get when they see a McDonald\u2019s restaurant. Their brand is powerful.<\/p>\n

Other food franchise brands we encountered along the way included, Hardee\u2019s, Shoney\u2019s<\/a>, Wendy\u2019s and one other well-branded food franchise<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Love Them Or Hate Them<\/h2>\n

The BP television ads<\/a> following the Gulf oil spill were terrible.<\/p>\n

Everything about them came across as fake. They weren’t very believable. The ones that are being produced now are weak at best. Personally, I don\u2019t think BP is about anything except pure unadulterated profit. Do you really think that their fracking practices are positive for the environment?<\/p>\n

Fast food isn’t healthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In general, fried hamburgers, french fries and the like aren’t good for us. You know it. I know it. Lots of mom\u2019s know it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But, when you\u2019re on the road travelling, you will<\/i> be eating at least one of several fast food franchises<\/a> that are located off the interstate.<\/p>\n

What it is-is what it is<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Franchises Dominate America’s Freeway Exits<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re going to take some risk\u2026and become your own boss, I\u2019d like to suggest that you choose a franchise that will allow you to be a dominant player in the market you’ve decided to serve.<\/p>\n

The examples that I presented above are powerful players in franchising. They\u2019re also powerful players in their local markets\u2026sometimes dominating them.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re everywhere.<\/p>\n

One more thing:<\/p>\n

My wife’s car<\/a> got 34 miles per gallon<\/strong> on our 1500 mile trip.*<\/p>\n

*2022 Update. Her new Toyota Camry Hybrid gets 44 miles per gallon on road trips.<\/p>\n
